RED VOLUNTEER - William Stewart and Ken Oakes / 1984 * Tetraploid- A Cultivar with double the normal or 44 chromosomes. This doubling of chromosomes began in about 1960 with hybridizers using colchicine, a chemical that allows the number of chromosomes to double, but the cell does not divide. Tetraploids tend to have LARGE flowers with a HEAVIER substance to the petals, scape, buds and foliage. Color Description: clear candle red self with gold yellow throat. Dormant or deciduous foliage in winter months. Mid Season flowering scapes as high as 30 inches with many blooms. Unusually Large 7 inch diameter flowers.
